The first children’s “chapter books” about herbs…
| ……………………………… |
Herb Fairies is written by Kimberly Gallagher, the creator of Wildcraft! An Herbal Adventure Game. Wildcraft! was born. Then, we could teach with storytelling.
|
……………………………… |
An herbal “mentoring system” for kids…
| ……………………………… |
Herb Fairies picks up where Wildcraft left off…. Though everyone who plays it loves it, we occasionally get emails wondering why we did not teach kids HOW to use the herbs in the Wildcraft game. Well, it’s a board game for kids. We wanted to keep the game fun and simple. We just wanted to make the connection with kids that healing and edible herbs exist.
With Herb Fairies, rather than JUST have stories, we turned it into a “learning system” for kids. | ……………………………… |
Welcome to the magical world of Herb Fairies…
![]() |
The fairies turn to the children for help, and they all discover that only by working together and healing the magic keepers from all of the different magical races can the magic be fully restored. Along the way, you will meet fairies that embody characteristics of the healing herbs. The stories teach in multiple ways, and by the end of the series you will be a keeper of plant medicine magic. You can even create your own journal of the thirteen plants covered in the series, recording their medicinal uses and experimenting with your own herbal preparations. Here are the two books you start with…
Book One: Stellaria’s Big Find
Imagine the excitement of four children playing in the park when they discover a real, live fairy. Not just any fairy, but Stellaria, the chickweed fairy. Chickweed is one of their favorite healing plants and it turns out Stellaria was looking for them. She needs the children’s help to restore the fading magic in the Fairy Herb Garden. When Stellaria takes them to her fairy home, the children find that restoring the magic means facing a troll. Can they figure out how to use chickweed to heal the troll’s ailments? Will they be able to solve the riddle to guess her name?
Book Two: Secrets in the Scotch Broom
When Hailey, Camie, Rowan, and Sarah find Viola, the violet fairy, while playing in the woods, they embark on another adventure to the Fairy Herb Garden. Viola explains how a troll is bothering the fairies, keeping them up at night with moaning and crashing sounds. The children eagerly help the fairies, using violets to heal the sick troll. Along the way they meet many other fairy friends, hear a mysterious story, and find out their quest might be bigger than they ever imagined.
Here are the covers of the other 11 books in the Book Club… Common questions we get are… “Are all the fairies girls?” and “Are they from different ethnic backgrounds?” As you can see below, there are boy fairies too, and they are of different ethnicities and ages. The Elder Fairy, is, well…an elder. And the fairies ethnicity is derived from what we found to be the place in the world that plant was native too. So, we could not cover every ethnicity in the 13 main fairies, but there are LOTS of other fairies in the books too who are of even more ethnic backgrounds. Below there are fairies from China, Spain, Egypt, Japan, North America, Europe, and even Sri Lanka.

What plants are covered?
| ……………………………… |
In other words, you and your kids will be learning the most important children’s remedy herbs throughout the adventure. You will not only know all about the plants, you’ll know how to use them for remedies if your child needs simple care for those everyday first aid situations. So, they are learning about the plants and YOU are learning how to use those very same plants to help them. In addition, the parts of the plants and the actual plants you want to harvest line up with the months in the story. For example, chickweed is a wonderful late winter/early spring herb. Calendula flowers in the summer, burdock roots for fall, cinnamon in the winter, and finally, the Spring begins again at the end of the story with….dandelion. This is why we deliver the books monthly through the seasons. You and your kids get to discover the herbs in nature, together. There is not another herbal book on the planet that does this. |

What last years Herb Fairies Book Club said…
| …………………………….. |
“This series is beautifully done. It teaches kids about herbs while appealing to their creative imaginations, building community, encouraging all those virtues and traits we want our kids to learn – like compassion, trust, truthfulness, bravery, love, and acceptance of diversity, and learning to find the best in others. It also teaches by the example of the kids in the story, about the interconnectedness of all nature, and about the need to respect every part of it, and that we are part of the web. it goes directly against the popular myth that nature is scary and harsh, dangerous and unpredictable. In Herb Fairies, kids become at home in nature, feeling safe, gaining confidence, and learning competency to use the simple tools at hand. they learn how to identify and use common herbs as food, in fun projects, and as medicines for common familiar ailments like insect stings and skin wounds. I highly encourage parents and teachers – anyone who works with primary age kids – to invest in this series!” - J. Driver, Great Falls
“Herb Fairies was a wonderful adventure for my kids. As we listened to the books the kids were mesmerized by the stories and trying to solve the riddle. I knew it was getting through when they started recognizing products at the health food store that were in the books, such as elderberry syrup, and they were able to recall the story. And they then became excited to make the syrup at home! I really knew it stuck when my 9 year old daughter wrote a story at school about taking a grand journey to the jungle, discovering new herbs, and becoming an herbalist! This program is designed to spur interest and wonder in the power of the earth and to empower our kids to trust the wisdom of mother nature. Equally as powerful a program for both moms and schools.” - L. Rooney, Illinois
“Come on, parents – admit it! You had fun too! Fun for the whole family! How would you like to share your love for learning about herbs with your kids… bonding with the grandkids… or just re-connecting with your inner"kid"? Do you remember how, as a child, you used to love spending time making a mess? Now you can do that and you won’t even get in trouble! Give your family the gift of herb fairies and you’ll be giving them hours of fun for the whole family and you get the added bonus of developing special relationships with your younger family members! quality time with the family spread out over the year? Who knows? Before long you might be learning more than herbs… and the price???? Can’t be beat!” - N. Dunn, Florida
“I believe that herbal fairies hit the nail on the head. It entices children with fairies that are approachable. Children characters that can easily be interchanged with your children reading them. the stories are garnished with situations that evoke empathy. They are engaging while all the while injecting herbal knowledge. These books are empowering to my children as well as to me and can be empowering to you. I would recommend these books with pleasure.” - J. De Laurentiis, New York
“Herb Fairies has opened up the world of plants for my four year old in a way that my most earnest instruction somehow did not. She always trusted the herbs in tinctures, teas, salves etc that I would give her when she was sick or hurt, but Herb Fairies got her out making friends with the living green beings in their natural state. I feel she is connected to the plant world now in a deeper part of her being. I’ve seen her experience real, spontaneous joy when she comes across a plant she’s read about in the books, and that is exactly what I always wanted for her to feel about herbs.” - B. Cook, New Zealand
“When the Herb Fairies was advertised I had to think hard about if we should buy it because we don’t have a huge amount of money and while it was good value it’s still money. However I had a four year old who was keen on growing things and healing methods and I really wanted to encourage that. I am very glad we did buy the Herb Fairies as the boys have looked forward to the books every month and have gone out to find the various herbs where possible as well as making various recipes both from the books and from wider sources we have found due to them being keen to find out more. My four year old has remembered an amazing amount of information and very much believes he is already a herbalist I think in large part because the children in the books are, where as many things he wants to do such as being a teacher he thinks he needs to be an adult to do.” - E. Reeves, England
“The Herb Fairies learning system has opened up an entire new world for my children. The excitement and anticipation for each new story and adventure was quite something and they were never disappointed. I feel that my children now have a solid foundation of herbal knowledge and several new fairy friends to dream up adventures with.” - J. Henderson, Canada
“Herb Fairies is a wonderful way of teaching kids about herbs and the magic of nature. Through the audio books, the stories, worksheets and coloring pages, it offers a comprehensive system that appeals to the kids on all levels. My kids were always so excited when a new Herb Fairies book was released and they would always play herb stories and go out into the garden to look for herbs. The stories are interesting, accurate and intelligent (but simple enough for the kids to understand) and as an adult, I found it easy to listen along or read the stories. I can highly recommend these books/program and as a practicing naturopath and herbalist, I was very happy to have a resource that complemented what I teach my kids.” - K. McElroy, Australia
“Herb Fairies is a wonderful and lasting way for children to learn. The benefits of each herb is encapsulated by magical fairies who teach courage, honesty and the importance of helping others. Each month your child will listen as the story unfolds and can follow the words in a beautifully illustrated book. They will learn about each herb and can then have fun following recipes with friends, watch their confidence grow as they share their herbal knowledge. These magical Herb Fairies enhance your child’s life by making them aware that herbs are magical too.” - K. Relf, United Kingdom
“Our family learned a ton of valuable information from the herb fairy series. We are pretty new to herbalism. A lot of herb books contain so much information that it is easy to get overwhelmed. The herb fairy stories presented the information in a way that was not overwhelming and easy to remember.” – N. German, Minnesota
“The Herb Fairies books were a godsend. I struggled to remember healing plants and their properties or even what one could do with them. The story helps to understand and love a plant. Even my grandchildren are still too young to learn from these books. Their parents are excited to have a grandmother who will read and work with their children on herbs, plants and natural healing. Not just the story, but the coloring and cooking and other activities make the plant memorable.” - K. Prochotsky, Canada
“My daughter really enjoys the books and now whenever she is playing it is not just"fairies" but"Herb Fairies" she plays! She even corrects me when I simply say fairies. thank you!” - J. Johnston, Ohio
“These books opened up a whole new world of discovery for my grandchildren. Where they complained about taking a walk with me, they now take my hand and say,“Let’s go, grandma, it’s time to go find dandelions!” (just as an example.) At an age where 12 year olds would rather skip town rather than hang out with"grandma" I’m delighted how close we have become. The topic of discussion at the dinner table will be wrapped around the latest herb and a lively conversation ensues! Then we decide what we will make next!” - M. Laczkoskie, Jacobus
“Herb Fairies is as much of a learning experience for me as it is for our children! I like that I can weave the herbs and the recipes into our home school work. We have so much fun together when we are learning together. we are beginning to feel empowered to share this information with others we know. My mother-in-law was stung by a hornet recently and the kids ran to find some plantain! She used it and was astonished that it worked! We are making our own teas from flowers/leaves and tinctures too. We are also now planting this plants in our garden. Thank you so much!” - R. Christie, New York
“We love the Herb Fairies! Our entire family of six has learned so much about plants, how they grow, and the many ways we can use them. On walks we are starting to identify more and more plants, and my kids are understanding how central plants and herbs are to our lives. My husband has had opportunity to discuss the herbs with his co-workers, and my children with their friends. I have always wanted to be able to learn more about herbs and their uses, but haven’t had the time while running a busy household - with these books I can make the time because we are doing it all together!” J. Aldrich, Spokane
“Our family has loved the Herb Fairies books. They are so charming and informative. The characters are engaging and lively and the information is transferred to the kids without them even knowing they are being educated. I am so glad that we purchased them. Of course, we have been pleased with all of the LearningHerbs products like HerbMentor, the Wildcraft game and the Herbal Medicine Making Kit. Love them all!” - J. Hunt, Georgia
“We have just loved using Herb Fairies. Such an easy and interesting way for the kids to learn. Simple things like the coloring pages allowed them to interact with the characters and the kids were always talking about the children in the stories – really brought it to life for them. Now if I can just figure out how to get the fairies to come here to take my kids to the Fairy Herb Garden.. they are always asking!” – S. Cederbaum, Georgia
“I love the entire Herb Fairies series. Each issue has easy identification of herbs, what each herb is used for, and the kids (and I’m 70 years old) really like learning things to make with the herbs we are learning about. I am the person getting the initial Herb Fairies and each month anxiously look forward to reading about how the herb got its name. This, and the story, are also greatly loved by the kids I am sharing it with. I love everything about Herb Fairies. The format is such that kids are interested in learning the facts and wanting to learn more about particular plants. I also love the drawings included throughout the series. I love how it is coordinated to the Wildcraft game, which I also have. It is an added way for the kids to get involved and excited about the learning process” - G. Franks, Oregon
“As a home-schooling family, this book series and accompanying materials has made a world of difference in our education about herbalism and the natural world. It is presented in the best possible format for engaging kids – enriched storytelling with lively and likable characters and situations. The Herb Fairy books impart important information in a fun and interactive way – must-have ingredients for understanding and retaining knowledge. Thank you” - M. Sheets, Portland
“My boys had so much fun with the Herb Fairies series. They look for the fairies in out garden. They can now identify and now some simple uses and recipes for the herbs they learned about” - C. Priestley, New Jersey
“Each month when the new Herb Fairies comes out, I download the mp3 onto my phone and surprise my daughters with it the next time we’re in the car. They love it and ask to re-listen to old ones in between the new ones! I am so glad we got this, it’s been a great learning tool for all of us, and I think we’ll re-listen most years and keep learning more!” – L. Brown, Pennsylvania
“As an herbalist, I had always thought that I would teach my children about herbs. They have learned a lot from me, but I could tell there was something lacking in my teaching, something that would really ignite their interest. For us, Herb Fairies worked perfectly. My children already had an interest, but this really approached them on their level and made herbs fun and fanciful, while teaching useful real-world skills. I love to see how fast my eight year old devours them, and my four year old loves it when she reads them to him. I highly recommend them, no matter what level of herbal knowledge your children have.” – R. Rebarchik, Missouri
“Magical!” - J. Zettervall, Minnesota
And that was just a FEW of them! There are DOZENS more we don’t even have room for here. |
